From Every Pine Tree
From Every Pine Tree
2017
Three-channel video installation, loop
The artist, along with her mother, stages an intervention on the Wyoming landscape where her maternal grandmother was incarcerated during World War II. Nels Smith, Governor of Wyoming (1939-43), said that if any Japanese attempted to purchase land in his state upon their release after incarceration, “there would be Japs hanging from every pine tree.” The performance attempts to revise this allusion to racialized violence and reclaim the land.
