"There are unknown knowns." takes its title from former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's amateur philosophizing on the nature of knowledge. Slavoj Zizek expands these terms to include the fourth term, the “unknown known” that is precisely Freud’s unconscious and Lacan’s “knowledge which does not know itself.” The multimedia installation centers on the relationship between seeing and knowing and cultural blindness toward images surrounding war.
